This week was report card pick-up at my school. The parent turn out for previous school
functions has been less than desirable, so my MT and I were a bit anxious for
pick-up. Fortunately, nearly 95% of my
student’s guardians came to report card pick-up. All of the guardians we spoke with had
supportive comments to share in regards to our instruction and their child’s
strengths and challenges. I believe the
positive disposition displayed by the majority of guardians was connected to
the dispersal of progress reports five weeks prior to report card pick-up. The progress reports provided guardians with
some insight into their child’s work. Providing guardians with authentic
feedback regarding their child’s progress likely limited emotionally charged or
negative conversations and attitudes.
Remember to think about ways you can continue to gather data and information about your students as you continue to teach them day to day (e.g., the student "smartness" chart which can document a lot of different evidence of students' processes). This type of information can be continuously documented and shared periodically with parents (as opposed to just information about grades).
