Week 9- October 30
As I continue to work with my students, look at their math work and listen to the conversations that they have in terms of Math, I am happy and excited to work with them to continue to build their Math skills. This week I started my GLT. I am in charge of teaching my students Unit 3 which is geared toward Linear Measurement. After reviewing my Pre-Assessment and having students talk about the concecpts I am teaching them before they start working, I am amazed to see that my students know more than they show on paper. My student's ideas about measurement connect to their lives because it seems that they do a lot with measurement in their homes. Students are able to make connections between measurements and making clothes, measurement and buying appliances and measurement in repairing their homes. One of the concepts that I really want my students to understand through this unit is that when you measure something you have to have units. I also want them to understand that wen you use untis, you have to be consistent with them. I told them that when they use inches for measuring things during classroom activites, they have to continue to use inches and not switch to centimeters. I am happy to say that I notice that student understand this idea. For one of my lessons student had to do a scavenger hunt and measure things in the classroom. When looking at this work as a part of my formative assessement, I saw that all students were consistent with their units.
The important thing here is that students are understanding the information that I am presenting to them at this time. Not only can I tell this by the whole group discussions that we have, it is also evident from classroom discussion as well as work that they turn in. This is also important because I know that the techniques I am using are working for my students. This is a case of attentive students and effective teaching. One can teach students various concepts but if students do not understand the concepts that are being taught then it can be deemed ineffective.
