A Foundation is Key
As I continue to notice how my students learn and how they behave, I continue to understand and realize that if sstudents do no have a foundation in learning different concepts and have a strong foundation on how to behave, students will struggle. Not only will they stuggle because they do not understand, they will struggle because they do not know how to express themselves. When some of my students do not understand a concept, they just tune the lesson out and do their own thing. When I ask them if they understand what I am saying, a certain student will say yes. However, when I send students back to their desk to work, this particular student always says that she does not know what she is supposed to be doing. When I ask her why she didn' ask questions during the lesson, she simply shruggs her shoulders. She is not the only student who does this. Students do not know know how to express the fact that they do not know what's going on. This is a case of student not wanting to look silly in front of his or her classmates. The important thing here is that as a teacher, I have to be mindful of things like this. I have to continue to ask questions, like I do now, to ensure that my students understand a concept that I am introducing. Instead of simply having students repeat what I said to make sure he or she is listening, I will tell the student to say what I said in his or her own words. This will give me a chance to to see what language he or she has been introduced to before and how I can adjust future lessons to make sure that I can grab students attention and make sure I am making sense to them.
